How to Change Windows 7 Login Screen

By | Aug 2, 2012

When you login to your Windows 7 computer (assuming you haven’t enabled automatic login feature), you’ll generally see a login window with a background looking something like this.

It’s fine; there’s nothing wrong with it. But sometimes a change is good so in this article we’ll show you how to change the background image behind the login screen to anything you want.

Windows 7 makes it easy changing the Windows 7 login screen. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Start, and click on Run, type regedit & press Enter key there.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\ LogonUI\Background
  3. Double-click the OEMBackground DWORD key
  4. Set value of the key to 1.
  5. Select a background image for login screen with size less than 256KB in size.
  6. Copy that image into the C:\Windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds folder
  7. Rename the image to backgroundDefault.jpg
  8. You can now restart, lock your screen or logout to see your new login screen.

To get the default logon screen back, just delete the backgroundDefault.jpg file. Windows will use the default background if no custom background image is available.
